Team Spirit Charl Bassil

Shared purpose is the glue that binds a team together, regardless of the circumstances.

Charl Bassil, Marketing Director for Pernod Ricard South Africa, aka “the Bass”, had a strong feeling that he was embarking on the equivalent of an extreme cross-country obstacle course when he left for Europe with the entire team of 300 Pernod Ricard employees. But Charl who was used to managing a very large team hadn’t thought much more about it.

In theory, the same itinerary for all 300 should ensure they would arrive as a team — that is, if they could manage to stick together along the way. In reality, the harsh winds of routine travel woes and unexpected twists buffeted the team from the start, threatening to scatter individuals across different airports in multiple countries. Charl knew staying together wouldn’t be easy — but he didn’t see any other way.

Charl took on the role of shepherd to a very large and disparate flock, making sure that everyone who had embarked on this audacious journey felt reassured that they were going to make it together no matter what. Charl would personally see to it that there would be no lost sheep left behind along the way. Colleagues laugh as they recall the last leg of their trip when Charl took over the airplane intercom from the flight attendant to welcome everyone aboard “Pernod Ricard Air”, and then proceeded to give them a brief, but witty, overview of safety procedures….and ended the announcement by informing the passengers that Pernod Ricard would be treating everyone to a free drink and snack!

“Despite all odds, not only did the team manage to support each other throughout the entire trying journey, they stuck it out together until the very end! All 300 team members from South Africa made it to Dublin just in time to celebrate!”
